Pennsylvania American Water starts $2.4m upgrade at Pittsburgh South Hills

Published 29 September 2017

American Water's Pennsylvania division has started new water main installation in Mt. Lebanon and Scott Townships for improved service reliability, prevention of water outages and enhanced fire protection.

The projects will replace approximately 1.8 miles of aging pipe dating back to the 1920s, at an estimated cost of $2.4 million.

Starting next week, crews are installing nearly 7,200 feet of new eight-inch ductile iron pipe along Bower Hill Road (Mt. Lebanon) and 2,400 feet along North Wren Street (Scott Township). The company expects to complete the new main installation, testing and disinfection, and connecting customers’ service lines to the new main by the end of 2017, weather permitting, with final paving restoration scheduled for completion in spring 2018.

Construction will take place weekdays between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Traffic restrictions will be in place during construction hours, and motorists are urged to find alternate routes. During construction, customers might experience temporary water service interruptions, discolored water and/or lower than normal water pressure.

Pennsylvania American Water, a subsidiary of American Water (NYSE: AWK), is the largest investor-owned water utility in the state, providing high-quality and reliable water and/or wastewater services to approximately 2.3 million people.
