American Water in Pennsylvania to upgrade water lines at Scranton system with $2.7m

Published 18 July 2017

Pennsylvania American Water is investing $2.7m to upgrade more than 15,000 feet of water main in Scranton to improve reliability for customers, reduce service disruptions and to increase water flow for firefighting.

The cost of the system improvements, which replace water main dating as far back as 1901, is approximately $2.7 million.

“These investments in our communities ensure that our customers continue to receive quality, reliable service,” said Traci Cross, senior manager of operations, Pennsylvania American Water. “Our team of water professionals brings years of experience, knowledge and sound engineering practices needed to ensure that we invest dollars wisely in the projects that will make the greatest difference in meeting the needs of our customers.”

Company contractors recently started construction to replace existing two-, four- and six-inch cast iron water mains with new eight-inch ductile iron pipe along the following streets:

Waldorf Lane
Sky Drive
Cedar Avenue
O’Hara Street
Walnut Street
Sanderson Avenue
South Edwards Court
Dickson Avenue
Pine Street
10th Avenue

Crews will work weekdays between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Traffic restrictions will be in place during construction. The company expects to complete the water main installation, including transfer of all customer services, final restoration, and paving by late fall.

During construction, customers might experience temporary service interruptions, discolored water and/or lower than normal water pressure. Crews will work as quickly as possible to shorten the length of these temporary inconveniences.
