CTBR Staff Writer Published 14 February 2017

Acciona Water has won the contract to modernise the sewer network in Guayaquil, Ecuador from the The Municipal Drinking Water and Sewage Company of Guayaquil.

As part of the contract, the Spanish company will build a new pumping station for the future Las Esclusas treatment plant at a project budget of $22m.

The pumping station dubbed as La Pradera will replace an existing pumping station and do its part in modernising the Guayaquil sewer network.

Financially backed by the European Investment Bank, the project will be carried out by Acciona Water on a turnkey basis. It is part of the sewer extension project spanning central and southern Guayaquil to cover the needs of one million people.

The new pumping station will have equipment that can handle estimated flows of 3.18 cubic metres per second. It will come up on a three-hectare land that will also house facilities for electrical system, control room and other services along with an odour control system that will fixed over the pump structure.

As per Acciona Water, the project is likely to be completed in 18 months which includes the commissioning of the new pumping station. The Spanish firm stated that the existing pumping station will be decommissioned only after the completion and operation readiness of the new one.

Last year, Acciona Water was awarded a $30m contract in northern Ecuador to build, expand and upgrade water capture and treatment structures in Esmeralda. As part of the turnkey project, Acciona Water will establish a drinking water treatment plant and an electric substation alongside its partner BTD.
